July 6th I am escorting
my husband’s grandma to New York. She is a pretty amazing woman. She is going
to be 96 this summer. I love hearing the stories she tells about her life long
ago on the farm. Everything was made from scratch or you had to work hard to
accomplish the task. I wonder if I could have been a housewife during that
time. I also wonder that every time I read a Janette Oke novel. In this modern
day of technology, things are very easy. Put clothes in the washing machine,
the dishes in the dishwasher, throw away the feminine products, buy everything
food-wise grown and prepared for you. My husband’s grandma lived on the farm.
To have eggs for breakfast she had to go to the chicken coop and get the eggs,
not just to her fridge. She knew they were “organic” and it didn’t cost her a
thing. She grew her own garden, not for keeping the planet green but for
survival. She didn’t need to go to the gym, life in general gave her enough of
a workout. Maybe to be healthy is the future, we can look backwards and see
what made people so strong. Women like her encourage me to be the best wife I
can be. She was married and faithful to her husband till the day he died. She
was a mother of seven I believe. Now at 96 she still does dishes, gets the
mail, and plays an awesome Scrabble game.
In the last few months, I have
found some pride in some of the “old-fashioned” stuff I am doing. We canned our
own tomatoes, we hang our clothes up on the line, and I haven’t bought a meal
in a box in over two years. For Christmas I made homemade French fried onions,
from scratch cream of mushroom soup, and used fresh green beans for my green
casserole. I knew everything that went into it. We make our own laundry soap too.
What type of things do you do that
are “homemade” or natural?
